About the Tasting:

New World vs Old World Malbec!

Altos las Hormigas is a Mendoza winery.  They also have the Causse du Theron project in Cahors, France.  Javier will lead us on an exploration of what makes the regions unique, as exemplified by these two wines.  The same gentlemen make both these wines, so the different terroirs really show!

After beginning our adventure in Lujan de Cuyo region, further southwest our team terroir hunting has uncovered the most impressive areas in the Uco Valley. These soils show a high active limestone content in deep stone layers with clay presence and good topsoil. The most notable of these areas are Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira.

The path of limestone in Cahors is daunting; its character is so dominating, that most winemakers find themselves making wines so tannic that drinkers will reject them. To walk a fine line and find the balance in this extraordinary potential is the challenge that motivates us and represents our dream and our commitment for the coming years. It’s not just about winemaking, it is a different way of looking at this Terroir: aiming for something that does not need power to express itself, an approach from soil to vineyard to bottle.  The fruit for En Pente (Slope) comes from the mountain slopes by the Lot River.
